Are You Musical Theater?
I'm taking a new class, which is always great. One of the girls took the train with me afterwards. And she asked me, "Are you musical theater?" I have to admit, as much as I've romantically used The Chorus Girl pseudonym, that I am not. (Although I've always longed to play Desiree in A Little Night Music; but you have to be much older for that part!) It was my sunny disposition that brought her to that conclusion; whereby I told her no, but I was a cheerleader from the Midwest!
There is a difference you will see between musical theater actors and "legit/straight" theater actors. And, true, this will not always be the case. But let me tell you: going to the open calls when a legit call and a musical call are on the same day....whoa! The singers/real chorus girls look awesome! There are even changing rooms for them, so they can change into their adorable sundresses and wear their t-straps. Their hair and makeup, stage-ready! They make the legit actors look a might scrubby lot indeed! And they are very loud and pretty young, with great bodies! You do want to be them. In a way...
...But I recently saw a friend's Shakespeare show. She's legit, as most of the lead actors were. But for some reason, they cast a musical guy to play opposite her. And while he may have been right for the essence of the role, and the characters were supposed to be from two different worlds, I just found his presentational style incongruous. He bothered me!
Anyway, I do wish sometimes I could get out there and sing my heart out. But I'll stick to the shower. For everyone's sake!
